Here's a contemporary and comedic interpretation of the medieval poem.  In this allegorical story, the Grim Reaper gives the startling news to Mr. Everyman that he will soon no longer live. As his doom approaches, Everyman tries to persuade family and friends to accompany him so he will not have to go alone. Will Everyman succeed in convincing the Grim Reaper it is not his time?  Will he be able to take anything with him?  Will anyone accompany him?   It is only Rev. Thompson's third day as pastor of New Hope Church. His secretary lays down the laws of the office, the janitor is "fixing" everything in sight, the most prestigious member of the congregation is on the war path and an eccentric lay-person presents some far out ideas for Sunday morning's special. The calamity and humor only escalate when a daycare moves into the church building after the pipes in their own building burst. Can God work in such a situation? Now a retired judge, he spends his days “enjoying life.” When he’s not flying around the countryside in his balloon or fishing in a nearby dry riverbed, he works on his books of nonsense. This prompts his daughter, Charlotte, to decide he’s lost his marbles. So, conspiring with a sly lawyer, she plans to not only become his guardian but also sell his house and property. Throw in a psychologist on her first case, love sick teenagers, an irate school bus driver and an occasional artist or two and it’s a madhouse! Will Doc be committed or not?   July 2012
